Research is Necessary:
First, research the place you wish to go for ice fishing. You can get all the information from Google. But it would be better if you talk to the local people. They can suggest you some particular place from where you can catch more fishes, which bait or rod is better for ice fishing and where to find those, the price range of fishing equipment, the best time for ice fishing and so one. You can even join a local group for learning ice fishing and gather experience.
Don’t Forget to Purchase License:
After your research, you already find the place where and when to go. Now the most important thing for ice fishing is the license. You have to buy a permit for fishing. Make sure that your license is valid in the state you wish to visit.
As it is winter so it would be wise if you dress properly. Remember in an exposed lake you will feel much colder. During so much cold it would be better if you wear clothes in layers. You should bring at least two snow pants, hand gloves, sunglass and don’t forget to bring sunscreen.
Wear a perfect winter boat which can keep your feet warm for a couple of hours. The weather can change according to the sun, and wind so makes sure that you are comfortable. If you are not comfortable, then leave the place.
Equipment You Need:
Auger: To make a hole on ice you must need an auger. Auger is a drilling device which has a spiraling edge to cut through ice. Select a perfect position and place the augur in that location to make a hole.
Rods: Regular rod can use in ice fishing too, but I am suggesting you purchase one which is shorter than average. It would be helpful for you.
Reels: An ultra light reel with a 2lb test is suitable for ice fishing. If already have an ultralight reel for regular fishing then that will be ok for ice fishing too.
Line: Line is important for ice fishing. You can purchase ice fishing lines from a local market or from online. For catching panfish go with 2 to 4lb test and for pike, trout and walleye buy 6 to 8lb test
Lures: A little collection of lures will be enough out on the ice, and an essential choice would consist of spoons, jigging cranks, jig heads and plastics for tipping.
Bring Some Food and Destruction Item:
Ice fishing can take a whole day. So, you will feel bored if you are just seating and trying to catch fish! Try to bring something that can entertain you!
Like you can make a nice book or magazine, or you can listen to songs or watch a movie on your device. Also bring some food and water to stay active all day.
Nothing is important than your safety. Remember, you can do anything if you are alive. It’s quite tough to focus all day while you are fishing. But always try to watch your step otherwise you can step inside a hole. And while making a hole on ice doesn’t forget to check the thickness. The best way is to bring someone with you while fishing.
Don’t be Upset:
Any types of fishing needs patience wheater its saltwater or on the ice! You may have to pass a day without catching a single fish. Or you may have to pass a couple of days without finding a single one! Don’t bother or upset it happens with everyone. Keep trying one day you will be able to catch a monster for sure!
That’s all! See ice fishing isn’t anything tough as you were thinking! Just do it you will find the fun and adventure of fishing for sure! Stay safe and Good Luck!
